The first P-51A flew on 3 February 1943. Unlike its predecessor, the A-26A, the P-51A was meant to be a fighter, not a bomber. It had the same external stores as the A-36A, but lacked dive brakes and chin guns. Aramament was limited to four .50 cal machine guns mounted in the wings. The leading edges were painted Yellow to enable Allied pilots to recoginize "friendly" aircraft while engaged in a large dogfight.
